The Kunstsammlung NRW, divided into K20 and K21, holds a vast collection of art from both the 20th and 21st century. It also houses the Fischer Archive, promoting scholarly research in contemporary art.

Currently, the K21 dedicates a retrospective to contemporary US-artist Jenny Holzer (*1950), who is world-renowned for her use of new technology and societal critique across different media.
